no balloons again...but I'm still smiling...

So we've just gotten back (well, on Monday) from the Pocono's.  I'm sure I've mentioned that we were up for the Timber & Balloon festival...timber? you might ask...yes, full-on lumber jack competitions...small town, usa - I'm telling you, you can't beat it with a stick!  While there were no hot air balloon launches - 2nd year in a row, I'm starting to get worried that it's just a hoax - Chris was such a good sport and went to the festival all three days with me, in hopes of seeing something spectacular...no such luck.

The weekend wasn't a total bust, however, I got to fulfill a dream that I wasn't even aware I had until the opportunity presented itself.  Yes, ladies and gentlemen, I was allowed to actually work the festival!!  Yours truly served hot chocolate, pub fries (some plain, some with cheese, some with chili & cheese), nachos, crab cake sandwiches, coconut shrimp skewers, corn dogs and the infamous fried cheesecake from noon-ish to around 6:00 pm while Chris, his dad and a friend Dave were out golfing...(10 holes from 1:00 - 6:00pm, I definitely had a better time)...and while I'm not quite ready to quit my day job, I certainly had a blast...I went home smelling like a grease pit, dirty, cold and with no desire to ever see fried food again - but, let me tell you it was 110% worth it - I got to people watch all day long and I had front row seating for the aforementioned lumber jack competitions...I can't wait for my next opportunity to fulfill this recently realized dream.

Unfortunately, there are no pictures (these are from the previous weekend) from this trip  because in my haste to get out the door and up the road 2 hours in order to see what they call "the glow" (nighttime hot air balloon launch) I forgot my camera, along with enough pairs of socks for the weekend...but for those of you that know me, there will be plenty more to come, this season and those to follow.

and...at the risk of rambling, I have one more thing to add...while I was away, Chris' sister, Danielle (in the picture to the left, on the left), went to cheer on a friend who participated in this year's 3-day, 60 mile walk for breast cancer.  While telling me about watching and cheering, I could help but to be completely consumed with her excitement and the compassion she described of those participating...so much so that I can only identify the feeling I got as she desire to complete the walk myself. I have decided that I will train for and complete the 2009 race.  It will be here in Philadelphia, in October...I've done some research and have started a schedule of training (as of Monday) in hopes of getting in shape early enough to have it 'down pat' by the time October '09 rolls around. I can't think of a single reason not to do this, the money that is raised goes for such an important cause that can, will or has touched each and everyone of us...it just makes sense to me to do my part - no matter how small...

Come back for updates on how I'm doing with my training...hopefully my excitement will pull me through the winter that's just around the corner...

until next time...
